About 25 species reported, mostly in temperate regions.
Substrate:
Saprophytic on dead plant material, especially grasses and sedges, also isolated from soil, wood pulp and paper.
Dispersal:
Spores are dispersed by wind.
Indoor Occurance:
Occasionally found indoors on cellulose-based materials.
Allergenicity:
Arthrinium phaerospermum was reported as allergen.
Pathogenicity:
Arthrinium phaeospermum has been reported to cause cutaneous infections.
Notes On Identification:
Spores are distinguisable on spore trap and surface samples. Species identification requires mycological examination of aporulating cultures.
