Distribution:
Actinomyces species are found world-wide and isolated from animals and human bodies.
Pathogenicity:
Some actinomyces species are known to be opportunistic pathogens causing actinomycosis in man. Some species of importance are A. bovis (causes actinomycosis in cattle) and A. odontolyticus (causes plaque and calculus).
Notes On Identification:
On gram staining and microscopy, Actinomyces appear as gram positive bacilli that are present in long chains and often show branching.
