Genus:
Ceratocystis/Ophiostoma
Distribution:
About 14 species of Ceratocystis and 102 species of Ophiostoma reported, mostly in temperate regions.
Substrate:
Most are plant pathogenic or wood-rotting fungi.
Dispersal:
Some species are associated with bark beetles and as such are dispersed by insects. May also be dispersed by wind once spores are released from perithecia.
Indoor Occurance:
Often found on wood frames in homes.
Allergenicity:
Unknown.
Notes On Identification:
Not distinctive on spore trap samples. Can be identified on surface sample if sporulating structure present. Perithecia associated with ascospores are distinctive on tape-lift samples. Genus and species identification requires culture.
Spore Types:
Some species are called "lumber yard fungi" and cause "blue stain". Ascospores hyaline, 1-celled, variable in shape. Perithecia with a very long and cylindrical ostiolar necks. The teleomorphic stages of the two genera are very similar, Ceratocystis wit
